Beyond Gadgets and Games: Meaningful Activities for Muslim Teens

Today’s teenagers live in a world dominated by screens. From mobile games to social media, countless hours are spent online, often at the expense of prayer, family, and real growth. While technology has its place, Muslim teens need meaningful alternatives that strengthen their īmān, character, and health.

At Bois2Men BootCamp, we witnessed firsthand how boys thrive when given purposeful activities. Here are some examples of what worked — and what parents can encourage beyond the screen.

1. Qur’ān Circles and Reflections

Instead of spending late nights scrolling, boys gathered for Qur’ān recitation, tafsīr, and journaling. Many shared reflections about how certain āyāt related to their daily struggles. This builds a love for Qur’ān while encouraging self-reflection and discipline.

2. Team Sports with Brotherhood

Football matches, group challenges, and court games gave the boys an outlet for energy while also teaching teamwork and discipline. Unlike solo gaming, these activities built friendships rooted in trust and cooperation. These actvities strengthen the body, build brotherhood, and reduce attachment to virtual entertainment.

3. Outdoor Adventures with Purpose

One of the most memorable experiences of the 2025 BootCamp was the 1hr (to & fro) trek to the Maqbarah (Muslim cemetery) in Moniya. The boys not only gained resilience from the trek but also engaged in cleaning the site and reviving the Sunnah of visiting the graves, reflecting on the reality of death and the Hereafter. With this, they were able to combine physical activity with spiritual reflection, teaching the boys humility, service, and mindfulness of the Ākhirah.

4. Mentorship Circles

Rather than watching YouTube influencers, the boys sat with Muslim professionals and scholars who answered real-life questions: from handling distractions, to building careers, to living responsibly as Muslim men. This provides positive role models and answers grounded in Islam.

5. Reflective Night Sessions

The boys spent their nights in relaxed group sessions, either in the compound or within the masjid hall. These moments provided space for reflection, storytelling, reminders, and sincere conversations in a calm setting. This is aimed to build emotional connection, encourage honesty, and the sessions gave the boys a sense of brotherhood in an Islamic environment.

Muslim teens don’t need to be disconnected from fun, rather they need to be reconnected with meaningful activities that build their faith, character, and resilience.

As the Bois2Men BootCamp showed, when boys are placed in the right environment, they naturally gravitate toward faith, friendship, and purposeful living.

May Allāh help us provide our youth with beneficial alternatives, and may He make them leaders who carry Islam with pride and strength.
